Chapter 27
âSenor Sanchez suggested I contact you,â the caller said, her voice smooth, deep, and mature.
âPlease, go ahead,â the Chief said, his office door closed. He walked to the window, holding the satellite phone.
âThereâs been contact, again.â
âWhere?â
âAt a different location, farther away.â
âWhat was the outcome.â
âWe were not able to realize our goals.â
âThat is disappointing,â the Chief said, continuing the non-specific discussion, in the event there was a listener on the line.
âThere was an interesting development, however.â
Landrieu knew this was the reason for the call.
âGo ahead, please,â he said.
âIt seems that there was an encounter between our target and another group.â
Landrieu did not respond and the caller continued.
âThe other group may have been pursuing the male companion of our target.â
âWhy would they seek that person?â
âWe are not sure, but are working sources now to learn more.â
âWas the other group successful?â the Chief asked, knowing that this must have been a hit team assigned to eliminate OâGrady.
âNo,â the caller answered, crisply.
âAre they continuing their pursuit?â
âNo. They were eliminated at the scene.â
The Chief was quiet, thinking of the implications.
âDid our target escape from that situation?â
âYes.â
âDo we know where he is now?â
âNo, but we are pursuing all leads. Your assistance would be helpful in this regard.â
âI will make inquiries. Could you provide details?â
âBlack Suburban. 3 occupants. One female, two male. All killed by gunshot. Access ramp at the interstate exit. Witnesses.â
âWitnesses?â the Chief was incredulous.
âYes, several. The encounter took place in broad daylight.â
âIt would be helpful to check local sources to determine whether our target has changed modes of transportation.â
âIâm on it,â the Chief said, concluding the conversation.
The Chief picked-up his office phone and pushed the button for Detective Travillere.
âThis is Quintus.â
âQuintus, this is the Chief. We may have a lead on the Hotel Monteleone incident.â
âAnything would help, Chief. Weâre cold on that one, aside from the interviews with OâGrady and Montague.â
âIt seems those two were spotted near Alexandria and may have been involved in a gunfight there.â
âOâGrady and Montague?â the Detective asked, surprised.
âYes, those two. It seems that they may have killed 3 persons, identities not yet known.â
âDamn!â Travillere said. âHadnât heard this report, yet.â
âThere were witnesses, Iâm told. Get over there and see what you can learn. Keep me posted. Be my bird dog.â
âIâm on it, Chief,â he said, pleased to have any reason to get out of New Orleans for a couple of days.
