Chapter 27

“Senor Sanchez suggested I contact you,” the caller said, her voice smooth, deep, and mature.

“Please, go ahead,” the Chief said, his office door closed. He walked to the window, holding the satellite phone.

“There’s been contact, again.”

“Where?”

“At a different location, farther away.”

“What was the outcome.”

“We were not able to realize our goals.”

“That is disappointing,” the Chief said, continuing the non-specific discussion, in the event there was a listener on the line.

“There was an interesting development, however.”

Landrieu knew this was the reason for the call.

“Go ahead, please,” he said.

“It seems that there was an encounter between our target and another group.”

Landrieu did not respond and the caller continued.

“The other group may have been pursuing the male companion of our target.”

“Why would they seek that person?”

“We are not sure, but are working sources now to learn more.”

“Was the other group successful?” the Chief asked, knowing that this must have been a hit team assigned to eliminate O’Grady.

“No,” the caller answered, crisply.

“Are they continuing their pursuit?”

“No. They were eliminated at the scene.”

The Chief was quiet, thinking of the implications.

“Did our target escape from that situation?”

“Yes.”

“Do we know where he is now?”

“No, but we are pursuing all leads. Your assistance would be helpful in this regard.”

“I will make inquiries. Could you provide details?”

“Black Suburban. 3 occupants. One female, two male. All killed by gunshot. Access ramp at the interstate exit. Witnesses.”

“Witnesses?” the Chief was incredulous.

“Yes, several. The encounter took place in broad daylight.”

“It would be helpful to check local sources to determine whether our target has changed modes of transportation.”

“I’m on it,” the Chief said, concluding the conversation.

The Chief picked-up his office phone and pushed the button for Detective Travillere.

“This is Quintus.”

“Quintus, this is the Chief. We may have a lead on the Hotel Monteleone incident.”

“Anything would help, Chief. We’re cold on that one, aside from the interviews with O’Grady and Montague.”

“It seems those two were spotted near Alexandria and may have been involved in a gunfight there.”

“O’Grady and Montague?” the Detective asked, surprised.

“Yes, those two. It seems that they may have killed 3 persons, identities not yet known.”

“Damn!” Travillere said. “Hadn’t heard this report, yet.”

“There were witnesses, I’m told. Get over there and see what you can learn. Keep me posted. Be my bird dog.”

“I’m on it, Chief,” he said, pleased to have any reason to get out of New Orleans for a couple of days.
